Hearing Loss Network News - 2005 Here are our recent press releases. If you're interested in keeping up with what we're doing, this is the place to do it! Our mission gets us out in the community on an ongoing basis, and here's where we'll keep you up to date. Check back often, and please do let us know if you think we're not doing a very good job of keeping you informed. Here are some of Hearing Loss Network's highlights for 2005:
January 26 - HLN Exhibits at Port of San Diego Health Fair Outreach Coordinator Michael Gergley, PR Coordinator Nicole Conrad, and Executive Director Larry Sivertson attended the HLN booth at the Port of San Diego health fair. The fair was very well attended, and HLN representatives were busy answering questions and passing out literature throughout the event. February 5 - HLN Exhibits at Parkway Plaza Health Fair This was our first booth at a shopping mall health fair, and we really had a great time! Outreach Coordinator Michael Gergley, Board Advisor Char Sivertson, and Executive Director Larry Sivertson shared booth duty throughout the busy day. We met lots of wonderful folks, answered many questions, and passed out hundreds of newsletters, flyers, etc. Here are a couple of pictures of Larry (left) and Michael (right) working the health fair.
February 16 - Presentation at Grossmont Gardens Executive Director Larry Sivertson and Outreach Coordinator Michael Gergley presented a one-hour version of HLN's popular 'Coping with Hearing Loss' Workshop at Grossmont Gardens in La Mesa. This is our first retirement home presentation this year, and it was great to be back in close contact with the people we serve. This group was especially interested in the California Telephone Access Program and tips for communicating in the presence of background noise. February 23 - HLN Complaint to FCC Results in Fines Following the October 2003 wildfires, our Executive Director filed complaints with the FCC regarding the lack of emergency captioning during the wildfire emergency. It took a while, but the FCC has finally levied fines on three of the local stations. Here's the whole story! March 7 - Volume 2 Issue 1 of HLN News is Published OK, we admit that it feels more like spring than winter. But technically, it remains winter until March 21. So we feel totally justified in claiming that our winter issue arrived right on time. Check it out! March 12 - HLN Exhibits at Rancho Carlsbad Health Fair Our normal health fair crew of Larry and Michael were happy to have board members Jan Mori and John Flattery on hand for this event! We met lots of wonderful people and passed out lots of our very helpful brochures! March 16 - HLN Executive Director Discusses Caption with Channel 6 Folks The recent FCC fines resulting from our complaints about lack of captioning during the October 2003 wildfires has really stirred things up! Although Channel 6 is exempt from FCC regulations because it is licensed in Mexico, the people there are still interested in providing the best possible service to San Diegans with hearing loss. We had a great meeting about how they can do that. March 22 - Article by HLN ED in "Voice of San Diego" Voice of San Diego is an online newspaper that was started a couple of months ago, and is really taking off. Larry Sivertson, our Executive Director, submitted an article about hearing loss resources in San Diego, and it was published today. April 15 - Presentation at The Patrician Executive Director Larry Sivertson presented a one-hour version of HLN's popular 'Coping with Hearing Loss' Workshop at The Patrician in University City. The presentation was well-attended, and the audience was especially interested in tips for improving communications. May 11 - Presentation at Buena Vista Knolls Executive Director Larry Sivertson presented a one-hour version of HLN's popular 'Coping with Hearing Loss' Workshop Buena Vista Knolls in Vista. This audience was more knowledgeable than most and had some great insights into issues faced by people with hearing loss. Their greatest interest was in assistive listening devices. May 14 - Presentation at SHHH - Escondido Executive Director Larry Sivertson presented at the regular monthly meeting of the SHHH chapter in Escondido. This was a very interactive presentation, with Larry and the audience members exchanging thoughts on a variety of topics, including advocacy, self-help groups, and assistive listening devices. This is a great group of folks, and we strongly encourage people with hearing loss in the Escondido area to drop by one of their regular meetings. You'll be happy you did! May 24 - HLN Exhibits at Scripps Health Fair Executive Director Larry Sivertson and Outreach Coordinator Michael Gergley exhibited at the Scripps Institute Health Fair. This event was well-attended by a group of primarily younger people. Many of the people who stopped to discuss their hearing loss admitted that it may be due to concerts, loud stereos, and personal listening devices. Those who have already experienced hearing loss are now very protective of their hearing. Are you? May 26 - Presentation at Brookview Village This was our first repeat performance! We presented here about a year ago, and they thought enough of our message to invite us back. We had a couple of returning participants and several new folks. As is so often the case at these presentations, many of the people who could benefit were absent. June 3 to 5 - HLN Hosts Speechreading "Train the Trainer" Workshop We often receive inquiries about speechreading (lipreading) classes in San Diego. As far as we have been able to determine, there are none. So we decided to grow our own speechreading teachers and start to offer classes. This workshop was the first step in that process. Laine Waggoner, an experienced speechreading teacher from Palm Springs, came down for the weekend to share her experience. It was a pretty intense weekend, but HLN now has five novice speechreading teachers in training. June 6 - HLN Personnel in Newsweek Magazine The Cover Story of Newsweek's June 6 issue is entitled "How to Keep Your Hearing". We're very excited to see that members of the "mainstream media" are starting to recognize that hearing loss is a serious medical issue. And we're even more excited because our Board Advisor (Char Sivertson) and Executive Director (Larry Sivertson) were interviewed for the article! Click here to read the online version. Sept 6 to 11 - HLN Personnel Present at ALDAcon Char and Larry Sivertson attended this year's ALDA national convention in Salt Lake City and presented portions of their communications workshop to a group of newcomers. They also had a wonderful opportunity to renew old friendships and make new ones. Their favorite activity continues to be ALDA Karaoke. Here's more information on ALDAcon 2005. Sept 27 - HLN ED Participates in SanDi-CAN Meeting Larry Sivertson represented HLN at the regular monthly SanDi-CAN meeting. The mission of this committee is to be the community-based action partnership of providers, volunteers, and consumers of services dedicated to improving the quality of life for older adults and adults with disabilities living in the City of San Diego. The group is just getting started and is working on developing foundational materials upon which projects can build. Sept 27 - HLN ED Participates in Police Chief's Disability Board Larry Sivertson represented HLN at the September meeting of the Disabilities Advisory Board to the Chief of Police. Topics included the Crisis Response Team, the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT), an Access Survey conducted by the Human Resources folks, a discussion of Traffic Signals, Signs, and Markings, and a discussion of the Emergency Communications Systems. Given the recent focus on natural disasters, it was little interest that the emergency communications presentation generated the most interest. Amont the topics discussed were the compatibility of the existing system to TTYs and pagers, and the importance of including actual disabled folks in the disaster preparedness drills. Oct 1 - HLN Participates in Deaf Awareness Day
Deaf Awareness Day (DAD) is one of our favorite yearly events. Despite the name lots of hard of hearing, late-deafened, and oral deaf folks are in attendance. The Balboa Park Club is filled with booths from organizations that cover every aspect of hearing loss, from technology to education to service agencies. The best part, of course, is the opportunity to meet and talk to hundreds of people who have a common interest in hearing loss. We spoke to people who are losing their hearing, people who lost their hearing 50 years ago, people who are concerned that they might lose their hearing, people who want to know how to talk to a person with hearing loss, parents of kids with hearing loss, kids of parents with hearing loss, and people who have just about every other involvement with hearing loss you can imagine. If you've never been to DAD (or even if you have), you owe it to yourself to attend DAD 2006. Stay tuned to this site for information as it becomes available. Oct 21 - HLN ED Selected for National Education Task Force The PEPNet Hard of Hearing Task Force has appointed Executive Director Larry Sivertson as a Content Resource Advisor. The Task Force will develop a handbook of best practices for providing services to hard of hearing (HOH) college students. The initial Task Force meeting will be in December 2005. Nov 18 - HLN ED Selected for National Emergency Planning Task Force TDI's Community Emergency Preparedness Information Network (CEPIN) Project has appointed Executive Director Larry Sivertson as a Subject Matter Expert for their task of developing a preparedness course for first responders and members of the hearing loss community. The initial team meeting will be in January 2006. Dec 1 - HLN ED Attends Meeting of National Education Task Force Executive Director Larry Sivertson journeyed to Chicago to participate in the first meeting of the PEPNet Hard of Hearing Task Force. Larry accepted the assignment of developing the chapter entitled "Providing Access to the University Experience", which focuses on college activities outside the classroom. |
