Hearing Loss Network Services

Our goal at Hearing Loss Network is to provide services to southern Californians affected by hearing loss. We have identified several needs and initiated programs to address those, and we'll get to those in a minute. But first, we want to encourage you to let us know if you're aware of a need that's not being met. Please note that we're addressing everyone who's affected by hearing loss - not only those with the hearing loss. We believe that family members, friends, and others in the lives of people with hearing loss are too often overlooked when we consider ways to mitigate the effects of hearing loss.

So, on to information about our ongoing services!

Monthly Meetings
If you're interested in attending regular meetings for support, information, social opportunities, or whatever, you'll want to check out our monthly meetings.

Outreach
People with hearing loss don't generally run around shouting about it. Most people who suffer from hearing loss first deny the problem for as long as they possibly can; when that's no longer possible, they may admit the problem to themselves and family members, but they try to hide it from the rest of the world. The bottom line for organizations like ours is that they're tough to find. We're working to root 'em out with an ongoing outreach program. More information

Speakers Bureau
If your organization would like to know more about hearing loss and how it affects people's lives, our Speakers and Consultants Bureau has just the folks to enlighten you. Our vision is a world in which hearing loss presents no barriers. Educating members of the general public helps us realize that vision. More information

Advisors Bureau
If your organization is wondering how you can make your facilities or programs more accessible to people with hearing loss, our advisors would love to work with you. Our vision is a world in which hearing loss presents no barriers. Helping you provide access to people with hearing loss helps us realize that vision. More information

Advocacy
There are lots of situations in which people with hearing loss can be deprived of their rights. The employment environment come immediately to mind, followed quickly by medical and legal situations. If you are aware of a situation involving denial of the rights of a person with hearing loss, we may be able to help. More information

Coping with Hearing Loss Workshop
Our most popular workshop! This one can be presented in as little as an hour or as long as a couple of days, depending on the needs and experience of the audience. We discuss the techniques and technologies that help people to cope with their hearing loss. The perfect workshop for a senior center, a service organization, or a group of professionals! More information

Computer Classes for People with Hearing Loss
HLN conducts beginning and intermediate computer classes for people with hearing loss. The instructor uses voice recognition software to convert his speech to text, and the text is displayed on a large screen using an LCD projector. This arrangement has been successfully used in the past; it eliminates the need for expensive real-time captioning (CART). The classes are held on four consecutive Saturdays. More information

Communications Workshops for People Affected by Hearing Loss
Families and other groups that include a hard of hearing or late-deafened member invariably struggle with communications issues related to hearing loss. Over time, the stress resulting from these communication issues can threaten the integrity of the group. HLN conducts workshops that address these issues. These workshops focus on revealing the dynamics of hearing loss-related communications breakdowns, and on teaching communications techniques that mitigate the communications issues. More information

Speechreading Classes
Everyone speechreads. Even people with normal hearing. But it's an especially important skill for people with hearing loss. It's true that there's some talent involved. Some people are just naturally much better speechreaders than others. But everyone can become a better speechreader by learning and practicing some simple techniques. More information
